Winter weather has shown up early this year and the Town of Georgina is ready. Did you know the Town is responsible for approximately 333 kilometres of roads, 140 kilometres of sidewalks and multi-use paths, and 25 municipal parking lots? A combination of Town-owned trucks and contracted services provide snowplowing and salting services to Town roads and sidewalks through a primary and secondary route system. 

New recycling carts are arriving. Georgina’s recycling program will transition to a provincial system managed by Circular Materials. As part of this change, 95-gallon recycling carts are being delivered to homes. Do not use these carts until Jan. 5, 2026.

The Blue Box recycling program in the Town of Georgina will transition to a producer-led system as part of a province-wide shift under Ontario’s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act. Residents can begin using the new blue box cart the week of Jan. 5, 2026.

Under this new framework, producers of packaging and paper products will become fully responsible for the costs and operation of the residential blue box program. This change is designed to create a more consistent and efficient recycling system across Ontario.

The Council of the Town of Georgina invites people to volunteer in their community as a member on the Safe and Active Transportation Advisory Committee. All appointments are for the remainder of the 2022-2026 Term of Council. Current Town board and committee members are encouraged to apply.

Council received the 2026 proposed budget which includes a 2.25 per cent increase for operating expenditures and 1.25 per cent increase for an infrastructure levy for a total tax levy increase of 3.5 per cent. The infrastructure levy contribution to capital reserves is essential to address the funding shortfalls identified in the Asset Management Plan. Georgina’s water and wastewater budget includes its own costs, as well as the water and wastewater costs billed by York Region.

GEORGINA, Nov. 5, 2025 – York University and the Town of Georgina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to formalize their long-standing collaboration in key areas of mutual interest.  

The five-year MOU outlines areas where Georgina and York can collaborate to benefit both the community and the University and further develop their shared interest in primary care, local economic development, entrepreneurship initiatives and knowledge mobilization.

Beginning January 2026, large-item collection in the Town of Georgina will become a scheduled service, similar to appliances and other large metal items. With the Town no longer collecting recycling due to the province’s transition of the recycling program to producers, there will be adjustments to how other waste streams (garbage, organic, and large items) are collected. Large-item collection will now be handled by a dedicated collection vehicle which will require scheduling.
